Summer in South Florida is alive with activities and the heat alerts do not seem to slow the pace. Hot off the presses, good news came from A Safe Haven for Newborns. That amazing nonprofit recently announced it had saved yet another baby, upping the previous count to 377. ASHFN’s founder and CEO Nick Silverio continues to look out for countless mothers and infants 24/7. This incredible human being with a huge heart has never taken a salary in all these years, and is one of the most compassionate people you will ever meet. Kudos again to nick and the ASHFN volunteers for making a difference in so many lives.

IN other action, the Miami Touchdown Club was recently featured on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE before its July 19 luncheon. The club held its annual Scholar Athlete and 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Team of Distinction Award Luncheon at Duffy’s Sports Grill in Kendall. This year’s honors went to Westland Hialeah High School quarterback Max Lawrence, who accepted the award with his family in attendance. Max has earned a Bright Futures Scholarship; is on the Presidential Honor Roll; graduated in the top 20 percent of his class and serves as President of the Mission Possible Club. Look for Max on the UM field as a Miami Hurricane where he will begin studies this fall.

Among the many notables at the luncheon honoring this fine young man was Holmes Braddock (one of the founders of the club that was founded in 1959). Miami Touchdown Club’s volunteer Executive Director, John Steinbauer, and the club’s Vice President of Programming, Stony Stonebraker, the guests on the show mentioned earlier, discussed Max Lawrence’s award and shared information on Miami Touchdown Club’s mission, membership and future events. Anyone who loves sports, man or woman, is invited to join the Miami Touchdown Club and membership also includes membership in the National Football Association giving members the ability to vote on the Hall of Fame inductees every year.

Another great nonprofit, The Magic Waste Youth Foundation, gathered supporters for a lovely reception at the Well Groomed Gentleman on July 18, in Coral Gables. MWYF founder Rudy Bustamante, owner and CEO of Magic Waste Management, welcomed friends, board members, and volunteers to promote this all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a foundation that helps former foster youth people reach their full potential, making the impossible possible. Among the many enjoying the evening were host Al Maulini, Rick Alberty, Rudy’s son Diego Bustamante, Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Myra Vide Rossi , Carlos Rossi, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Olga Salas- Olivera, Vanesa Montero and Olga Olivera. For more information of the Foundation, visit www.mwyfoundation.org.

Finally, Actors’ Playhouse is proud to close its milestone 35th anniversary season with the United States premiere of Defending the Cavewoman by special license from Theater Mogul and GFour Productions. This original and fabulously female response to the Defending the Caveman story created by Emma Peirson and Vanessa Frost and written by Emma Peirson has become a worldwide phenomenon drawing large audiences and critical acclaim in several European cities. Now, for the first time ever, North American audiences will have the chance to catch this wild one-woman show starring award-winning actress Lindsey Corey! Opening night festivities began at 7 when guests enjoyed an open bar by Bacardi and Savory crepes from the CrepeMaker before being thoroughly entertained by Lindsey’s performance. The show runs through August 6. For tickets, visit actorsplayhouse.org

Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges, and make a difference.
