The Florida law firm of Markowitz Ringel Trusty + Hartog, P.A., with offices in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, has strengthened its Restructuring + Insolvency practice group with the addition of prominent bankruptcy and insolvency attorney Joel L. Tabas as Of Counsel.

“Joel Tabas is one of Florida’s most well-known, distinguished bankruptcy and insolvency attorneys whose highly successful career representing bankruptcy trustees, debtors and creditors has spanned four decades,” said Managing Shareholder Jerry M. Markowitz. “Our clients will benefit greatly from Joel’s wide-ranging experience in complex bankruptcy commercial litigation and as an appointed panel trustee and examiner.”

Tabas’ law practice concentrates in bankruptcy, workouts, receiverships, creditors’ rights and commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in cases involving manufacturing concerns, commercial fraud, large real estate reorganizations, healthcare workouts and receiverships. Tabas has served as both counsel and as an expert consultant in complex malpractice cases involving allegations of professional malfeasance in bankruptcy matters against attorneys and accountants. He was formerly the founder of Tabas & Silver, P.A. in Miami.

Tabas is a Panel Trustee for the Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of Florida, having been appointed in 1992. He has served as a court-appointed examiner in complex cases involving ponzi schemes, real estate ventures, and distributing and manufacturing concerns. He has also operated commercial airlines, real estate companies, restaurants and retailers and participated on creditors’ committees in complex reorganization cases such as Planet Hollywood, Brothers Gourmet Coffee and Discovery Zone. In conjunction with such examiner appointments, Tabas was called upon to prepare feasibility studies on the effectiveness of manufacturing and cost accounting controls and determine the viability of going concerns. The report issued by Tabas in one such appointment resulted in one of the only successful bankruptcy criminal prosecutions in the Southern District of Florida.

Tabas is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and was a past president of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the Southern District of Florida. He is admitted to practice before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida. He holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law as well as a B.A. in Economics and an M.B.A. in Finance and Management from the University of Rochester.

The Florida law firm of Markowitz Ringel Trusty + Hartog represents businesses, institutions, fiduciaries, and individuals across four practice groups, which include Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights including Mediations; Complex Business Litigation and Dispute Resolution; Business and Real Estate Transactions; and Probate, Guardianship, Estate Planning, and Elder Law. Dedication to clients and service to the community are the principles upon which Markowitz Ringel Trusty + Hartog was founded more than 45 years ago, and upon which it still operates today.
