Best (and Worst) of Miami 2024 According to Me

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s “Ebony And Ivory”, the worst duet of all time, was banned in South Africa in 1985. They sang, “There is good and bad in everyone.” Here’s hoping that CRT, DEI, affirmative action, MeToo, LGBTQ, Latinx, and Pro-choice advocates will survive in 2025. Now that that is off my chest, here are our best and worst, also set to music.

The Best:
“The Creator Has a Master Plan”: Miami in winter is a gift from God.

“This Must Be The Place”: Coconut Grove and Coral Gables should inspire South Miami.

“Life’s One Act Play”: The Arsht, the Moss Center, Miami Light Project, and GableStage provide.

“Your Body is a Wonderland”: Lifetime at the Falls is so well run; I nominate Steve Datte for President and Derek Gelber as most likely to save us as the waters rise.

“Places and Spaces”: Fairchild, Pinecrest Gardens, Miami Beach, the Redlands, Coconut Grove,The U, FIU, and MDC. Miami Art Week.Miami Book Fair. The elephants on the beach by the Faena.

“Stormy Weather”: Exciting thunderstorms “Summertime”: Beachtime

“Supermarket”: Milam’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Fresh Market’s design, Publix BOGO, and Aldi’s prices.

“Music Is My Sanctuary”: Calle Ocho is the best because it is free. iiipoints in Wynwood is electrifying. Rolling Loud at Hard Rock Stadium has the mainstream heavyweights. Ultra in Bayfront. Vibra Urbana at Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo.

“Hungry”: Give me Zak the Baker, Books & Books, Graziano’s Mercado in the Gables, Knaus, La Sandwicherie, Arbetter’s, Lots of Lox, The Golden Rule, Soriano Brothers, Tropical Chinese, Izakaya, Glass & Vine, Matsuri, Flanagan’s, Moulin Rose, Judith’s Market, Alaine’s Osteria, Pepiteria 13, Mary’s Coin Laundry, El Carajo, El Brazo Fuerte, El Rey de Las Fritas, Sapore di Mare, Narbona, Macondo, and the like. I’m fully opposed to all these big chains and fancy groups, but I like The Chef Showdown.

“Movie”: The Miami Film Festival and Miami Jewish Film Festival’s showings at the Koubek and Coral Gables Art Cinema. Nice to see people going to see films.

“Baila Baila Baila”: SalsaCraze, the Salsa Cooperative, Miami Baila, Casino d’Primera, Salsa Vida, Salsa Fina, Karibe, Salsa Kings, Salsa Lovers, Studio 1890, Ball & Chain, Tu Candela, Giralda, The Ritz Carlton, the Intercontinental.

“No Place Like Home”: Spotify, football, hot chocolate, Hallmark Christmas films, Maria Callas, Tuesday, Emilia Pérez, Hulu, MAX, Christmas decorations.

“I Look Good”: The uniforms and colors of the Dolphins, the U, the Marlins, the Heat, Inter Miami. The WBC teams and crowd. Nobody does it like Miami.

The Worst:
“I’m Not Moving”: Our traffic #+$#&!!!! SMH.

“Build Me Up Buttercup”: Construction is a forever nuisance.

“I Can Change Your Mind”: NO YOU CAN’T. Arguing about politics is a waste. If anything happens, everyone will show up at Versailles and let us know.

“Show Off”: Greed is bad. 50% of Americans don’t have $500 for an emergency.

“Maggot Brain”: Our algorithms and the talent free influencers who interrupt our every click when all we want to do is to check on our childhood friends and relatives. Stop calling your neighbors fascists, socialists, and Marxists. Polarization is dangerous. Brain rot is dangerous. Get off your phone.

“The Royal Scam”: I don’t want to sell my house, donate to fake foundations for police or firefighters, or have an environmental house exam.
