The Cancer Support Community Greater Miami hosted its annual Heart & Star award dinner at Temple Beth Am last month and honored two outstanding recipients, Adam Carlin and Joseph Roisman.
More than 300 business and philanthropic leaders turned out to salute Carlin for his commitment to the South Florida community and Roisman for his efforts to unite others toward a clearer focus and greater good. Carlin is the winner of the Champion of the Community Spirit award for his commitment to South Florida and his efforts to unite others. Roisman is the recipient of the Champion of the Human Spirit award that honors cancer survivors and those who have been a beacon for others faced with the disease.
“I am so humbled to receive this meaningful honor,” said Carlin, director of Wealth Management at the Bermont/Carlin Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. “I feel as though I’m one of the luckiest people in the world. I have an incredible wife; cherished role models such as my grandfather, and I wake up every morning excited about the job I truly love. Having respect for the blessings I have been given, it is my obligation and part of my life’s work to give back.”
Roisman, executive vice president of Perry Ellis International, said he was equally honored.
“I am so fortunate to be living in this great country where opportunities abound and somebody like me can be considered for this great honor,” he said. “I want to make sure that others have the support I had. Having gone through two health scares made me realize that life is short and you only live once. Enjoy every minute of it because you cannot predict what will happen next.”
Danielle Spiegelman, executive director of Cancer Support Community Greater Miami, praised Carlin and Roisman as “deserving champions” for their contributions to the community.
“The event was a poignant and impactful evening,” she said. “Not only did we come together to celebrate two outstanding men, but the Heart & Star dinner was an opportunity for those who already support us to reaffirm their commitment to our mission.”
Emmy Award-winning news reporter and cancer survivor Laurie Sten hosted this year’s dinner, billed as an event “celebrating life beyond cancer.” More than 300 business and philanthropic leaders attended and the event raised more than $195,000 for the CSCGM’s free cancer programs.
The evening featured special drawings for a 12-night Mediterranean voyage aboard the Queen Victoria courtesy of Cunard Lines, a dazzling Judith Leiber bag donated by Capretto Shoes and a stunning 18-carat white gold pedant from H&H Jewels.
