Artistic director/choreographer Wade Schaaf brings the Chicago Repertory Ballet to the Main Stage of South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center on Saturday July 25 at 8 p.m.
Following his own distinguished career as a dancer, with credits including Ohio Ballet and Omaha Theater Ballet among others, Schaaf, 36, founded his Chicago-based company in 2012 because of his personal commitment to creating new choreographic works and to develop them over time with a professional corps of top-rated dancers. The corps today includes Jacqueline Stewart, Danielle Mathews, Sarah Olson, Andrea Deline, Carley Klebba, Becky Mikos, Phillip Ollenburg, Greg Blackmon, Oscar Carillo and James Stevko. The performance, co-presented by Culture Shock Miami, the Miami-Dade County student arts audience development program, and the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center will feature a program of the Chicago Repertory Ballet’s recent works based on messages, metaphors and storytelling.
The program includes Still Life by Tenley Dorrill, based on French Impressionist painting and was the winning work in CRB’s inaugural choreography competition. Jacqueline Stewart’s awardwinning duet It’s Not Enough to Close Your Eyes incorporates the concepts of truth and secrets in relationships. Finally, multiple works by Schaaf will be performed, including his solo Dancer and one of his latest works, Wasteland, based on the Japanese movement expression of butoh. Rounding out the program, Schaaf will present his 2014 version of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.
“Storytelling is something that I find so important and enjoyable in dance and that’s where the company gets its title Ballet,” said Schaaf.
