Christmas time is here

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Christmas is almost here, and though it may seem as if there is nothing going on but chaos, if you are thinking about something to do in our tropical winter, consider some of the following.

For a sweet holiday experience, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker returns to the Arsht.

This magic begins the moment you arrive with an immersive (I hate that word) preshow that welcomes you to the Candyland journey cherished year after year. At the Ziff Ballet Opera House from December 12 – 28, this is Miami City Ballet’s signature holiday tradition.

On December 19, Nu Deco Ensemble returns to the Arsht, along with terrific Grammy winner PJ Morton and friends for an evening of music, community and soul. The orchestra will celebrate Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life with the world premiere of a symphonic suite, and welcome composer and pianist Courtney Bryan for her vibrant piano concerto House of Pianos. This brand-new Nu Deco work will joyfully close a year which has driven many of us crazy with a celebration of good vibes.

Also sounding good on the 19th, December’s Laser Evening mixes holiday classics and other beats under the Frost Planetarium’s 67-foot dome.

Last and least on the same night, for desperate incels adoring Tesla Cybertrucks, boatstrikes, insults, and clamoring to invest in online betting platforms like Kalshi while taking a break from podcasts and gaming, Jake Paul headlines a “boxing” card at the Kaseya Center versus Anthony Joshua. The entire event will be available as a punishment to stream on Netflix for all subscribers crazy enough to watch it. As this highly anticipated (by nobody) fight edges closer, who knows how to describe people who are interested in this match between the 28 year old, 14th ranked cruiserweight, whatever that is, and the 36 year old ex-champion who is much younger than Mike Tyson. Go see PJ Morton and NuDeco or the lasers instead in order to keep your good reputation and finances intact.

Back to serious fare, Andrea Bocelli returns for his annual Concert for the Holidays, presented by the Arsht and performed at the Kaseya Center downtown on December 21. As one of the most recognizable voices in the entertainment industry and revered by fans internationally, Bocelli has sold nearly 90 million albums, and nearly as much tissue paper for every time he has sung “Time to Say Goodbye”.

Then there are the lights. Pinecrest Gardens will present its annual Nights of Lights on select evenings through Sunday, December 28. Through January 5, Christmas Wonderland At Tropical Park returns with holiday displays, light shows, and carnival rides. Kids can explore Santa’s Village, meet Saint Nick, enjoy story time with Mrs. Claus, and leave their parents at a snowy ice bar. Last but not least, until January 12, Fairchild’s Night at the Garden holiday light event returns. It’s family-friendly, illuminating Fairchild into a magical, colorful wonderland for children of all ages.

Finally, if none of this holiday activity is for you, hang the lights at home, golf, smoke, barbecue, drink, Netflix, and chill. Merry Christmas.
