The Florida League of Cities (FLC), the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments for more than 100 years, today announced that this week is Florida City Government Week. During this week, cities throughout the state will help educate the public on the importance of local government, what it does and how it directly impacts them. The weeklong campaign is sponsored by the League and is part of its ongoing effort to promote and foster civics education and engagement. Following the devastation of Hurricane Ian, cities, now more than ever before, are showing their abilities to help residents and businesses repair and recover.

“Local government is the one closest to the people and the one that has a direct impact on the daily lives of their residents and businesses,” said FLC President Jolien CaraballoVice Mayor for the City of Port St. Lucie. “Particularly during times of crisis or disasters, cities are there each day helping residents recover, repair and reconnect to each other. Florida City Government Week is an opportunity to recognize not only what cities do in difficult times, but also the many wonderful things they do to make Florida’s cities great places to live, work and play.”

Florida City Government Week’s annual theme, My City: I’m Part of It, I’m Proud of It, encourages cities to celebrate what makes their individual city, town or village great. To do so, municipalities plan a variety of events and activities throughout the week including city hall open houses, volunteer projects, citywide contests and more.

Created in 1990, Florida City Government Week is held every October and is one of the League’s signature events. For more information on Florida City Government Week, visit FlCityWeek.com.
