In a powerful display of community spirit, more than 100 local Target employees gathered at the Carrie P. Meek/Westview K-8 Center in North Miami, on Thursday, June 12, for a high-impact service project aimed at revitalizing the school campus. Partnering with HandsOn South Florida, the team completed the “Bullseye Build,” in just four hours, transforming the school grounds and demonstrating the power of corporate-community collaboration.
The school buzzed with activity, as teams of volunteers tackled a range of projects designed to enhance the educational environment for the school’s students. Volunteers constructed an outdoor classroom and picnic benches, built raised herb garden beds, and installed a native butterfly garden complete with winding pathways. Both inside and outside the school, volunteers painted vibrant murals, featuring uplifting quotes, which infused the campus with color and inspiration. As a creative tribute to literacy, they also designed “Super Reader” capes to spark students’ enthusiasm for reading.
The initiative is a part of Target’s commitment to community impact and youth education. Over 80% of students at Carrie P. Meek/Westview K-8 Center are economically disadvantaged, making the improvements especially meaningful.
The event also served as a tribute to Congresswoman Meek, a trailblazer who championed access to education and opportunity throughout her career. By investing in the physical environment of the school, Target and HandsOn South Florida hope to carry forward her mission of empowering the next generation.
“This project is tied to our values at Target,” said Alfonso Hammitt, District Senior Director and Group Community Captain at Target. “We are part of the community: we work here, we live here. And we want to make sure the community sees how much we care.”
The volunteers are eager for the teachers, students, and staff to see their hard work when the academic year starts again in August.
