Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I became very excited about the residency program at Deering Estate in September 2021 after I produced a site and situation-specific 16mm projector performance after being invited to participate in the sound art festival, Subtropics 25. I shot a film on-site that was used in an expanded cinema performance in the auditorium. The process made me want to explore the property and collaborate with others as an artist and cultural programmer, with Deering as a base and source of inspiration.
I’ve slowly been shooting film footage created at the Deering property and synthesizing it with other legacy media materials. Historical context from readings, exploring the grounds, and experiments in art and technology will guide my artmaking.
Please get in touch as I am excited to provide a free half-day workshop for current Artists in Residence at Deering Estate called 16mm for Contemporary Artists on July 22. It will be classroom-style and hand on. I have a limited cache of gear to use during the workshop and will have to limit the workshop to ten participants. Materials and supplies are provided.
It’s an introductory film workshop specifically for contemporary artists “born digital” or new to analog photography and new to working with 16mm film. Residents will learn how to handle, load, run, clean, and operate several spring wound (no batteries!) H16 Bolex cameras and a Krasnogorsk 3.
I’m grateful to have Artist Clifton Childree, well known locally for cinema-adjacent artmaking work, with me during this session as we relay techniques and enthusiasm for personal expression and experimentation with cine cameras.
We will discuss analog to digital workflows, working with labs and colorists, film stocks, light meters, lenses, filters, and camera mounts. Throughout the day, several rolls of film will be exposed and later sent to a lab for processing and scanning. After completing the workshop, and if you’re really into it, we can discuss your future use of the Krasnogorsk camera package. It includes a zoom lens, film stock, and accessories to continue their exploration of analog media making. This loaner package was put together for other artists through some Knight Foundation investment in my practice.
Also, I hope you’ll join me in the auditorium at the Visitor’s Center on August 12 for a screening of artist films in their original 16mm format. The show is tentatively called Tropes and Techniques: A 16mm Experimental Film Program and is very similar in concept to a screening that I organized in the Fall of 2022 with a big assist from Lili. It went pretty well, and the community engagement was exciting. The August screening will be a free presentation of rare Avant-garde and experimental works from cinema history in their original 16mm film formats. The films are from all over the globe and concern formal beauty expressed through techniques and tropes standard in experimental cinema. I’m organizing the screening for several reasons, to position my research in handmade works of personal filmmaking as a public exhibition of vintage film prints and aid my technical practice and the development of new artworks that are site/situation specific to Deering Estate. Research and development with a public component, as many works are unavailable on digital platforms. I hope to see you there.
