This month, we are proud to highlight Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Josh Aronson. Josh Aronson is a Miami-based artist and photographer whose work explores masculinity, tenderness, and belonging through staged photographs made across Florida. Raised in Miami after immigrating from Canada at a young age, Aronson uses photography to imagine new relationships between people and place. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from Northwestern University and is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate.

This April, Aronson’s work will be on view in exhibitions in Boston, Chicago, California, Atlanta, New York, and Miami Beach, as well as in Anarchy, an international traveling exhibition spanning France, England, Italy, and Japan. He will also present a site-specific project at ARTS Southeast in Savannah as part of Starland First Fridays. His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, The Paris Review, Financial Times, Frieze, Italian Vogue, Teen Vogue, Dazed, i-D, and The Guardian. His first zine, Tropicana (2020), is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Library and the Library of Congress, among others.

Alongside his exhibition work, Aronson also organizes public programs that invite broader audiences into photography and visual culture. Recent programs include Local Views with Josh Aronson: Language and Image at Pérez Art Museum Miami, Vizcaya Late: Creative Connections at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and Photo Book Speed Date with Josh Aronson at SFMOMA. During his residency at Deering Estate, he is developing a new body of staged narrative photographs for a forthcoming museum commission, rooted in the landscapes of coastal South Florida and his ongoing interest in rest, wonder, and belonging.
