Yessica Gispert is an Artist in Residence at Deering Estate and a multidisciplinary artist from Miami, FL, whose practice explores material transformation as a conduit for memory, ritual, and embodied knowledge. Drawing from the syncretic spiritual traditions of her Cuban heritage and informed by diasporic experiences across the Americas, Gispert works with wax, resin, metal, and photochemistry to create tactile, sensory-driven pieces that hover between the visible and the felt.
Gispert holds an MFA from NYU Steinhardt and a postgraduate degree in Media Art from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, Germany. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including MoMA PS1, Museum Abteiberg, Dortmunder Kunstverein, Bonner Kunstverein, A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, Tunnel Projects, Emerson Dorsch Gallery, and the Frost Art Museum in Miami. She is the recipient of numerous Honors including public art commissions, Miami Individual Artist Grants, an Ellies Creator Award, and the Coral & Cathers Award. She currently serves as Visiting Associate Professor in Photography at Florida International University and is an Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate.
Her current exhibition Susurro is on view at the Frost Art Museum through August 31, 2025. Centered on the idea of a whisper, Susurro brings together new works, key pieces from the past five years, and select objects from the museum’s collection. The exhibition continues Gispert’s material investigations into memory, migration, ecology, and resilience—inviting viewers into quiet encounters with objects shaped by touch, transformation, and time.
The Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) supports artists who work in various disciplines and media.
The AIR Program offers professional visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary artists the opportunity to pursue innovative projects and studio work, connect with other artists, and engage the public while interacting with the historical, architectural, intellectual, archeological, and natural elements of the Estate’s inspiring environment.
