Paloma Aisenberg and her dad, Sergio Aisenberg, both Pinecrest residents, have both landed roles in the beautiful Fiddler on the Roof musical coming Nov. 13-16 to Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, presented by the Miami Acting Company.
Paloma plays the role of “Chava,” one the daughters, while her dad is the bookseller “Avram.” They say being able to share this experience together has been such a special gift in each of their lives. While Paloma is an active actress who has won awards and has been in many shows throughout her life, this is Sergio’s first acting experience and he couldn’t be happier because he gets to be in his favorite show in the whole world with his only daughter.
Fiddler always has been a very important show to the whole Aisenberg family. In fact, Fiddler was the theme of Paloma’s bat mitzvah where she and a few of her friends performed Matchmaker. Her dad sang If I Were a Rich Man and, with her mom, Jackie, they sang the duet Do You Love Me?
One of Paloma’s very good friends who ironically sang Matchmaker with her at her bat mitzvah (a very talented singer/artist Brooke Sterling) told Paloma about Miami Acting Company’s auditions for one of Paloma’s favorite shows. Paloma jumped at the chance! These two friends were both in Miami Children’s Theater’s production of Fiddler on the Roof four years ago where each played a younger daughter than the one they play today. Now Paloma and Brooke will be performing side by side in Matchmaker in the Banyan Bowl.
Her dad, Sergio was estatic when his daughter got the part. However, deep down inside, he wished he could also be in the show. His wife had a good feeling about this and encouraged Sergio to audition. While talking on the phone with the director, Kenneth Kurtz (professor emeritus from the University of Miami), Jackie told Mr. Kurtz: “Please listen to my husband sing. He loves this show more than anything!”
Sergio sang his heart out with songs from the show. The rest is history!
Father/daughter have been rehearsing together at the Pinecrest Community Center with Miami Acting Company, and have been meeting such amazing and talented people who love theater and who produce community theater at the highest level, with a stellar professional staff. Now the father/daughter duo are about to show all their hard work to all who will come and support.
Fiddler speaks of the challenges of Jewish people at the start of the 20th Century in a world of turmoil with the challenge of maintaining traditions in a changing world, but having a universal message that has made it (for decades) the longest-running play in the history of Broadway.
Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13, 14 and 15, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m., in the Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Rd. General admission tickets are $30 ($25, seniors; $20, students with ID). Group rate discount available.
