FilmGate XR/VR Interactive Film Festival has reinvented itself for the Tenth Anniversary festival. The festival is set for November 29 to December 3. The films will premiere in Downtown Miami and the University of Miami.
“Our theme is Regenerate X – collective reinvention. Using arts and culture to create a better humanity,” says Diliana Alexander, ED, co-founder of FilmGate. “We are really proud.
It’s our tenth anniversary. When we started, it was too new, nobody knew what to do with us. Now Miami has caught up to us. We know that this is the future, and that future is very close.”
Most of the projects will be either U.S. premiers or world Premiers.
“Everything is immersive, everything is interactive,” she says.
There will be six films that incorporate AI.
“For most people, even in those in the industry, it will be mind blowing,” Alexander says.
“Even people in the industry, it will be inspiring and inspire them to use technology in interesting ways.”
She says her industry has approached AI in a cautiously optimistic manner.
“We have to proceed with caution. There needs to be regulations,” she says. “But it is very exciting as creators to see… you can dictate your imagination.”
She says AI extrapolates creative vision, but they don’t believe creative roles should be replaced or actors be replaced.
“I think creativity and originality is as important as it’s always been,” she says.
This year the film festival will have the largest number of Florida based projects.
“It’s very exciting to us,” she says.
There are projects from all over the world, including one from Germany called Mind the Brain.
“It’s a neuro active virtual reality journey delving into the intricacies of the human brain,” she says. “We love that project. It only premiered in Germany before.”
This year they have a Taiwanese spotlight which features five projects. The festival is also hosting projects from Argentina, Brazil, France, Canada and across the US.
“And 18 creators and technology companies and cultural agencies will be in attendance,” she says.
There is also a film called Body of Mine, which is a full-body virtual reality experience. It allows attendees to experience gender dysphoria by inhabiting the body of another gender.
The shows at the Perez Art Museum Planetarium are her favorite nights.
“The audiences are craving immersive,” she says. “I highly recommend the Planetarium night. A lot of people say it’s their favorite experience during Art Basil.”
There are three days of events at the University of Miami, including 30 interactive and immersive projects. There will be interactive games and Dome experiences as well.
Some require headsets and others don’t need headsets at all.
Alexander is excited about the future with some big innovations expected.
“It’s going to be a big deal when Apple drops their headsets,” she says. “Even remote work and remote education will be interesting.”
The festival will feature not only the film premiers, but creative labs, master classes, creator talks & pitches. Tech companies that will do presentations include Meta, Microsoft, Apple, and SNAP.
