In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month, Orchestra Miami presents Bizet y La Cucaracha, a bilingual performance of the traditional Hispanic tale about a charming cockroach and her struggles with decision making, set to the famous music of the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. It happens on Sunday, October 23, at 3 p.m. at Pinecrest Gardens.

Performed by Orchestra Miami with special guests, HoBuCo, creators of Musical Fairytales and narration by Oscar Bustillo. The program also features an introduction to the instruments and other songs celebrating composers and artists from across the Spanish-speaking world.

Musician and program producer, Belinda Niling Stohner, explained.

“I co-created a family series called Musical Fairytales, which is kind of like Peter and the Wolf in nature,” said Stohner. “The story we’re doing this time is a Spanglish version of La Cucarachita Martina, which is paired with music from Bizet’s Carmen Suite, and the orchestra will also perform some modern songs. We are definitely excited! This is our first bilingual Musical Fairytale. The other ones we’ve done were The Three Little Pigs and Rumpelstiltskin, with Beethoven and Mozart symphonies respectively. Although the music is Bizet’s, it’s still an incredible amount of work because we have to cut the music down to the exact note and figure out how it fits with the story. By the end, you always end up knowing the music like the back of your hand.”

La Cucarachita Martina is based on a popular Cuban and Puerto Rican children’s story
about a little roach who learns many lessons on her journey to find true love, happiness and friendship. When Martina finds a penny and buys a tin of face powder, suddenly everyone wants to marry her! But what this lady roach wants is friendship, kindness, thoughtfulness and sharing.  She discovers there is more to life than looking pretty.

Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi is conducting the concert and is proud of their work.

“It’s narrated by HoBuCo’s own Oscar Bustillo,” says Rinaldi. “Children will learn about music from around the Spanish-speaking world, as well as the lessons of finding beauty within. This fun concert and story performance lasts approximately 50 minutes and is recommended for age three and up. Juice and cookies served after the performance.”

Tickets start at just $8 for kids, $12 for seniors (65 and up) $15 for Adults. Family Packs (2 kids + 2 adults) are available for just $39. Go to https://www.orchestramiami.org/bizet-y-la-cucaracha
