Former Councilmember Nancy L. Harter Dies at 76
Nancy L. Harter

Former Councilmember Nancy L. Harter passed away on the morning of January 20th, 2025, after a four-year journey with rapid onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in 1951 to John and Virginia Harter in Hingham, MA. She grew up with her siblings and fondly remembered going on family summer car camper trips exploring the United States. Nancy attended Hingham High School for two years before moving to Palo Alto, CA and finishing high school at Palo Alto High. After high school, she returned to Massachusetts to attend Wellesley College, where she double majored in Political Science and Economics, graduating in 1972. Her time at Wellesley inspired her life-long passion for uplifting the rights of women as equal members of society.

While in college she also married her first husband, William Glass. After she graduated from Wellesley, they moved to Charleston, SC to continue their education. Nancy studied at the Citadel and was one of the first women to receive an MBA from the institution. Her marriage ended and that brought a career change and a move to Miami, FL.

In Miami she rose through the ranks in the banking sector to become a Vice President for Commercial Loans at Citibank, helping finance many projects across South Florida. Nancy also met her second husband and partner for the rest of her life, Kerry Herndon. Together, they had three children, Eleanor, Andrew, and Emily. Shortly after the birth of Emily, Nancy left the banking industry to support Kerry’s company, raise her children, and volunteer. She was a loving mother who strongly supported and advocated for her children.

Nancy’s volunteering supported many organizations, including the Girl Scouts of the USA and Wellesley College’s Alumnae Association. Her volunteering efforts in the community led her to run for office locally. Nancy was elected and served two four-year terms on the Village of Pinecrest’s Village Council. In all her roles, she sought to bring tangible benefits to the community through thoughtful, fair reasoning.

Throughout her life she demonstrated a deep determination that has inspired many of the people in her life.

She is survived by her husband Kerry, their three children, and her siblings Carol, Tom, Jim, and Laura.

In lieu of a memorial service, her family invites you to honor her legacy by following her example—dedicating your time and efforts to making a positive impact in your local community.
