Freddy Cole Quartet, Jan. 10, Saturday, 8 p.m. — “Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing; he is overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.” — New York Times; Growing up in Chicago, Cole, the youngest of five children, including his brother, the late great Nat “King” Cole, recalls, “Music was all around me with visitors that included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton.”
Moving to New York in 1951 to study at Julliard, Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues to flourish today. With several albums and Grammy Award nominations to his name, Cole doesn’t apologize for sounding like his brother Nat. There are certain unmistakable similarities. His vocals are suave, elegant, formidable and articulate and among the most respected in jazz. With a long list of awards and credits, his latest recognition came in September 2013 when he was named Best Male Vocalist, Best Jazz Artist and Best Ensemble by The Hot House Jazz/ Metropolitan Room Jazz Awards.
