From Food Pantries to Fundraisers: South Florida Clubs Unite to Make a Difference

Pinecrest Rotarians gathered on August 27 at Evelyn Greer Park for a program that was both inspiring and impactful. The guest speaker, Maryann Rio, founder of PORCH, shared how her organization supplies food pantries in nearby public schools to help children from food-insecure households. At this meeting, members of the Pinecrest Rotary Club brought non-perishable foods to support the cause. In turn, PORCH provided the club with additional bags of food, which members then delivered to W.J. Bryan Elementary School, where 75 percent of the students face food insecurity. This school outreach is just one of the many ways Pinecrest Rotary continues to serve the community.

In Coral Gables, September is all about Gringo Bingo! The Coral Gables Woman’s Club has two events this month — the first on September 9 at Birdie Bistro, and the second on September 17 at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen. The larger Bay 13 venue was chosen to accommodate an expected bigger crowd supporting the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF). These September events follow an incredibly successful August fundraiser that brought in more than $1,100, thanks to a lively turnout. Big thanks to ongoing sponsors and supporters including Lynn Bauer & Dr. Hal Wanless, attorney Jerome Kavulich, Community Newspapers, Steven Bradley, Vivo Sports & Social, and the many friends who show up month after month.

Birdie Bistro also recently hosted another creative charity event. On August 23, a speed dating mixer doubled as a fundraiser for Women for Success. While the men slightly outnumbered the women, everyone had a great time, proving that sometimes making new friends can be just as rewarding as finding a date. The evening was emceed by Erica Rodriguez from the nonprofit, while physical therapist and part-time DJ Alex Guillen kept the music flowing and even treated the crowd to a song. Kudos to Rita Tennyson and her Birdie Bistro team for providing such a welcoming venue for nonprofits like Women for Success, which offers women free workshops, tools, resources, mentorship and even small business grants.

As September unfolds with football, festivals, fundraisers and back-to-school energy, one thing is clear: South Florida thrives when service, arts and culture come together. To highlight this, I recently welcomed two outstanding leaders on Gloria’s Gab LIVE: Sammy Gonzalez Zeira, Founder and CEO of Young Musicians United, and Sheila Womble, Executive Director of Arts for Learning. Both are part of Arts Access Miami, an initiative that expands opportunities for children and families to engage with the arts. Tune in at cnewstv.com to watch the interview and learn more about how these organizations are changing lives through music and the arts.
