Two radical, multicultural lunatics are soon coming to the Arsht Center to spread their ridiculous comedic genius on current events with which we have all been shackled.
Needless to say, sparks will fly. The irony is this: Hasan Minhaj and Ronny Chieng have “weird” names unbefitting “Americans” and have made livings airing their grievances.
Hasan Hates Ronny | Ronny Hates Hasan will take place for two nights at the Arsht on November 14 and 15. The Friday night show is already sold out. They call it a debate to the death, something MAGA might literally hope for, but which they bill like this: During these divided times, many people believe that open dialogue and discourse are the only tools to mend a divided nation. Comedians Hasan Minhaj and Ronny Chieng believe the opposite: hatred is the answer.
For one night only — in 19 cities — Hasan and Ronny will face off in a no-holds-barred live debate where they will take each other to task personally and professionally. If hate is your love language, don’t miss out. That’s how they are framing this.
Now that I’ve gained your attention, let me lose it and circle back to a reason for this digression. Once upon a time, somehow, someone ruined everything by complaining about the rise of DEI. How it happened may have coincided with a 2015 trip down an elevator, after incessant false claims that the President at that time had actually been the beneficiary of a faked birth certificate, which led to conspiracy floodgates being opened and subsequent permission for any nutcase with a podcast to amass a following of like-minded nutcases to spread all types of racial, medical, economic, ethnic, scientific, and educational nonsense into the airwaves. How many lies does a fraudster unfurl, before it’s allowed to be fact?
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind farm turbines offshore that are killing whales plus casting shadows that are causing autism.
If you are not aware, Ronny Chieng is a Malaysian-born comedian and actor known for his role on The Daily Show. He’s got a law degree. He likes to address the elephant in many American rooms, race and identity. Hasan Minhaj also has Daily Show roots. He has often connected Indian culture and modern American politics. Born in Davis, California, to Indian Muslim parents, political science made his comedy about more than race and identity. Both of these dudes are reasons why authoritarian wannabes would love to silence political comedy and the fact that both can link their contempt for DEI erasure to race and identity – they are not from the Mayflower – makes it easier to sell.
Erasing cultural history will never work because there are too many creative, outspoken Americans now. It is not woke to say that the cool cats are long since out of the bag. In order to make America great again, we must acknowledge that we are what we are: diverse citizens dreaming about equity and inclusion, not the opposite. The subtext that Ronny and Hasan deliver is actually that this land is your land, my land, and our land.
I don’t want to miss this show.
