It’s a New World after all

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the author of this ever serious column, let me begin as usual by reminding the thousands who read this of the follow-up to up-tempo “If I Had No Loot,” Tony! Toni! Toné!’s slow jam “Anniversary” which was certified gold as it peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B Singles chart in 1993.

Similarly (or definitely not) New World Symphony (NWS), America’s Orchestral Academy, will mark its 15th anniversary of the stunning Frank Gehry-designed New World Center with the music of composer and conductor John Adams, under the baton of both Adams himself and NWS Artistic Director Stéphane Denève. The January 17 performance will be presented on Miami Beach as a WALLCAST Concert and streamed live for free on NWS Inside.

Recently, the WALLCAST Concerts have received an energy-efficient audio upgrade, offering improved clarity, depth, and dynamic sound for the thousands of audience members who attend the free concerts in SoundScape Park each season. For 15 years, NWS’s WALLCAST concerts have transformed SoundScape Park into an open-air concert hall, projecting live performances onto the building’s 7,000-square-foot exterior wall, where anyone can bring a picnic, beach chairs, and enjoy the live classical performances.

Adams, Denève, and NWS Fellows will be joined by Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson for a retrospective of Adams’ work on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18. Ólafsson will delve into Adams’ catalog, including I Still Dance, composed in honor of NWS Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and his husband Joshua Robison.

“January is a celebratory month for New World Symphony … an especially poignant moment following the recent passing of its visionary architect, Frank Gehry,” said President and CEO Howard Herring. “With New World Center, Frank dared to reimagine the orchestral experience, making it not only accessible to all, but deeply personal by breaking down the barriers that separate artists and audiences.”

Tickets to New World Symphony concerts are available online and in person at the New World Center box office or via phone (305-673-3331). Subscriptions are available for best seats, subscriber perks, and flexibility, plus more than one-third of all NWS concerts are pay-what-you-wish, many starting at $0.

NWS says that programs, artists, dates, prices and availability can be fluid, but hopefully not like the Christmas Eve Jazz Jam that drummer and vibraphone player Chuck Redd, concert host for close to two decades, decided to abort after President Trump added the Trump name to The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, a decision made by President Trump’s board and Chairman Donald Trump, so don’t expect cancellations like this here.

Maybe one day, Miami will celebrate an anniversary at MDC’s Trump Library, though I suspect that the architect and its gaudy gold décor might not measure up to venerated Frank Gehry like the flamboyant Village People don’t quite meet the standards of the sophisticated New World Symphony, but I have been known (by AI) not to be serious, so time will tell.
