Legendary Doc Severinsen at South Motors Jazz finale

“Heeeeere’s Johnny! “

That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of late night television for three decades. The ‘Johnny’ was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon and the bandleader was none other than the great Doc Severinsen. His Tonight Show run began October of 1962 and ruled late night television for thirty years. On May 22, 1992, it came to an end…

Within a week of the final telecast, Doc Severinsen was on the road, and to this day, audiences across America love and respect Doc not just because he shared their living room with them for so many years, but because of Doc’s love of the Big Band repertoire. His musicianship keeps this iconic American music fresh to this day with a repertoire that includes Ellington and Basie standards, pop, jazz, ballads, big band classics and, of course, The Tonight Show theme. A Grammy award winner, Doc has made more than 30 albums–from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Today, Doc has not lost his flair for the outrageous fashion statement or his trademark wit. But his gregarious nature has never interfered with the fact that he has been one of the greatest trumpeters and musicians of the last 60 years, respected in the worlds of classical music, jazz, big band and in the end, has transcended his celebrity and rejoiced in his remarkable ability to simply play his trumpet!

It is through the generosity of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation along with special funding from our title sponsor, South Motors, that we have been able to bring jazz artists of Severinsen’s prominence to Pinecrest Gardens this year not only to perform, but to mentor gifted jazz students from the New World School of the Arts in a special Knight Foundation funded program entitled Gen-Next Jam. These exceptional young artists will be rehearsed by Doc for two days prior to the concert on April 9 and perform with him as his back-up band on stage for the evening. Tickets for this very special season finale are available on-line at pinecrestgardens.org or at 1-877-496-8499.

A. O. Scott – New York Times

Emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated.
