Letter in support of West Matheson

I am a native Miamian who grew up in the area now known as Pinecrest (formerly Dade County).  I have fond memories of visiting and exploring the Matheson Hammock park areas since the late 1950’s.

The Matheson West park area is a well-preserved remainder of Dade County’s unique subtropical hardwood hammock.  The Matheson family generously donated this property to allow the public to view and experience this unique habitat. However, the Matheson West park area has lately been appropriated by dog owners who allow their animals to run unleashed and poorly supervised.  This has the effect of denying access to those who may want to visit to experience the park’s natural beauty.

The Dade County Parks Department has spent may years of careful study to develop a plan for restoring the park.  They now have the funding to complete the project.  Improvements and additions will be made to the existing parking areas on Old Cutler Road which has always been the park’s designated point of public access.  An elevated boardwalk will lead into the park from the Old Cutler Road parking area to provide increased accessibility while minimizing visitors’ environmental impact. Other improvements will include restoration of the historic coral rock nursery, improvements to the hiking, jogging and cycling trails and open areas for picnics and exploration,

The restoration will provide a large, fenced area for dogs. This will protect others from unleashed dogs that can be large and aggressive.  The Parks Department is well experienced in the proper design and construction of these elements.  The construction will be completed with negligible environmental impact.

The restoration of Matheson West will enhance the overall accessibility and desirability of the park.  I look forward to again being able to quietly enjoy the Matheson West park’s unique natural beauty after the Parks Department has completed the project.
