Memory of hugs from school children in Roatan brings tears

Members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club departed MCS’s World American for a day of service in Roatan, Honduras for what proved to be the best day ever for all. Club members, whose cruise was a fundraiser for the club’s free children’s dental clinic, had collected school supplies and backpacks to be delivered in person to an elementary school’s kindergarten class in Roatan. As the members entered the school gate, the sweetest children dressed in their best pressed and starched school uniforms rushed to greet club members with hugs that brought the first of many tears that morning. This service day was orchestrated by CGWC member Rita Tennyson at rcatering and events. Roatan is Rita’s hometown and, with lots of family and friends still living there, she was able to identify this elementary school in need and arrange a service project on the day that the ship docked in that Honduran port of call.

During the visit, the club’s past president and current GFWC FL District 11 Director, Dr. Ruth Martinez, captivated the kids by reading to them “Where the Wild Things Are.” Then something very special happened that brought tears to the club’s President Arely Ruiz, whose birthday was that very day, July 1. The children gathered to surprise her by singing Happy Birthday followed by a giant hug. For Arely, it was the most beautiful gift ever, and, for all, it was a day that none of us will ever forget. The club was most grateful to the teachers and staff who were also very welcoming and appreciative including Katie Elisa, Martinez Zapata, Kendra Suyapa, Dilbert, and CEPB Ivan Jones.

To complete the day, the group enjoyed taking a ferry to another little island to enjoy lunch, water sports and more. It was one of many perfect days on the cruise that also docked in Mexico and MSC’s private island. Among the highlights during the evening were some of the best shows ever experienced on a cruise ship from such glitzy shows as Queen, Whittney, Dirty Dancing to parties such as a private Speak Easy and deck parties.

There was also an Xfactor show that included several great singers selected to compete after being identified at Dueling Pianos and Karaoke shows on the ship. CGWC’s own Carmen Suarez was one of the few selected to perform at that show with her amazing rendition of Crazy by Patsey Kline.

As members return to Miami, the thoughts of the children in Roatan remain as they took a piece of our hearts. Who knows…another visit may come.
