With half of the world toasting Donald Trump’s Oval Office resurrection and the rest terrified, will the Prez now become a lover of literature or continue the art of the tweet?
Only time will tell. But, no matter what, there’s one thing we can count on: the 2024 Miami Book Fair is coming, and it’s going to be fascinating! Because here in Miami, thanks to Miami Dade College, we know that books, beats, and a little bit of literary mojo can unite us all, even when the ballot boxes and ventanitas divide us. So buckle up!
This year, from November 17-24, Downtown Miami again transforms into a page turning paradise, with hundreds of authors and thousands of readers converging for a celebration as colorful and complex as our city. You can shake your Books & Books bookmark at sort of/honorary/erstwhile locals like Dave Barry, Billy Corben, Edwidge Danticat, Jim Defede, Jen Karetnick, Ron Magill, Leonard Pitts Jr., Paola Ramos or Jorge Ramos. Or you can hobnob with luminaries like Frank Bruni, Connie Chung, Billy Collins, Griffin Dunne, Malcolm Gladwell, Lisa Lerer, Thurston Moore, Ray Suarez, Kara Swisher, Amy Tan, Clarissa Ward, Maya Wiley and Moon Unit Zappa. Picture it: hundreds of authors, thousands of readers, and more book signings than a doctor’s waiting room.
Kicking it off like the NFL on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., NYC DJs Tedd Patterson, Hector Romero, and Tony Touch are bringing their A-game with house, dance, and hip-hop beats that’ll get even the most bookish crowd bobbing their heads and loosening their laces. It’s free, and don’t be surprised if you spot a few authors breaking down their dance moves – we’re Miami, after all.
As for some other literary heavyweights? Eddie Glaude Jr. will be in town to chat about his newest work, We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For, as inspiring as it sounds.
Stacey Abrams, who relentlessly persists, will share insights on her fiction writing in While Justice Sleeps. Then there’s Don Lemon, pondering spirituality in I Once Was Lost: My Search for God in America—because, hey, why not?
Panel discussions? Oh, they’ve got those, too. Expect some spirited debates at sessions like “Cultural Legacies: Wisdom, Wellness & Education in Latinx & Caribbean Narratives” and “Racial Justice and Activism: Voices for Change.” And one that’ll probably pack the house: Ventanitas: A Window into Miami’s Coffee Culture by Daniela Perez Miron, with photography by GESI SCHILLING, a love letter to our little coffee windows that keep us caffeinated and connected.
Schilling’s lens captures the essence of those gathering spots where politics brew as strong as cafecitos. Joining the project’s roster are serious Miami talent: Eileen Andrade, Carlos Frías, Tere Estorino, and Mike Romeu, all guided by moderator Melody Santiago Cummings, the executive director of O, Miami. It’s a lineup as rich as café con leche, and I’m as cheesy as a pastelito.
When the sun sets, the fair transforms into LOST CHAPTER, a nightly event under the stars with local DJs spinning fresh grooves, cocktails, mocktails, and bites courtesy of Smorgasburg Miami. It’s the perfect scene to swap book recs, snack on some street food and enjoy our nightlife without leaving the block.
So grab your planners, clear your schedule, and get ready to dive headfirst into a week of reading, raving, and really good company. The Miami Book Fair 2024 is more than just an event; it’s a community celebration, a carnival of culture, and one fine reason to finally finish that stack of books on your nightstand.
