The Miami Book Fair International will be bigger and better than ever as it celebrates its Fortieth Anniversary.
The book fair runs Nov. 12-19 with many events now streaming online, including Kerry Washington in conversation with Eva Longoria and appearances by stars such as Henry Winkler, Joan Baez, New York Times columnist David Brooks, Carl Hiaasen, Meg Cabot and Cassidy Hutchinson, the star witness of the January Sixth Congressional Committee.
“We are celebrating Miami Book Fair memories,” says Marci Cancio-Bello, book fair program manager. “We have new partnerships and new categories of books and panels.”
The programming includes a huge variety of books including general programming, fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels and kids.
“We are also inviting the full 50 National Book Award longlist finalists,” she says.
There will be an opening day Flashback Block Party at 5 p.m. on Nov. 12 featuring the grammy winning DJ and producer Louie Vega.
The popular street fair runs Nov. 17-19 and will again host Generation Genius, the Porch along with stages and music, street acrobatics, costumed children’s book characters, and dancers.
“Look for all of the cool niche booksellers and venders,” Cancio-Bello says. “We have some cool people this year.”
One of those cool people is Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon, which he wrote and self-published as a teen. It was so popular it was re-issued by Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House after Carl Hiaasen brought it to their attention.
Paolini takes us back to the Inheritance Cycle world with his latest book, Murtagh: The World of Eragon.
“It’s not from Eragon’s point of view, it’s from Murtagh’s,” Paolini says.
It revisits the themes of the series.
It’s been a while since he revisited and became immersed in Eragon’s world. The last full-length book, Inheritance, came out in 2011. However, he released a collection of Eragon short stories in 2018-2019.
“It was like returning home,” he says. “It felt lovely. I spent so long working on the Inheritance Cycle from a young age, it rewired my brain. It’s an instinctual thing. Returning to it was far easier than I expected. The difficulty was in coming to it from Murtagh’s point of view.”
Murtagh is a troubled anti-hero character – Eragon’s half-brother.
“A mirrored version of who Eragon is,” Paolini says, adding Murtagh is who Eragon would be if he grew up in a more difficult situation.
Paolini just finished writing Murtagh and Fractal Noise, a science fiction novel, the prequel to his first sci-fi, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. He’s touring for both books.
“After I tour, I will reevaluate where I’ll be focusing my energy next,” he says.
One of the projects hopefully coming up is the Eragon television show with Disney Plus that he will be producing and co-writing. He expects to write a lot more in both the world of Eragon and the Fractalverse.
“Now that I’ve written all these different books, I’m always excited for new challenges and trying to test myself with new challenges,” he says. “There is always another level of achievement to strive for.”
Paolini’s appearance will be Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Miami-Dade College Second Floor Auditorium in Building One.
An Evening with Cassidy Hutchinson on her book Enough is scheduled for Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. also in the Second Floor Auditorium in Building One.
An Evening with Henry Winkler on Being Henry: The Fonz and Beyond is set for Nov. 17, at 6 p.m., also in the Building One Second Floor Auditorium.
