Very few people know from an early age what their career path will be, while most others sample various jobs until they find their professional niche. In the case of Dr. Alvaro Larin, founder and president of Miami Veterinary Specialists (MVS), becoming a veterinarian has been his lifetime goal since he was a child.

Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of MVS near the intersection of Sunset Drive and SW 87 Avenue. The practice is the first and only veterinary specialty clinic in Miami and is staffed by board-certified doctors and certified veterinary technicians 24 hours a day.

“Upon returning to my hometown of Miami after completing my veterinary training, I realized that there was a need for a practice providing specialty medical treatment for pets,” said Dr. Larin. “There simply weren’t any, and being a veterinary specialist myself, I founded MVS.”

Dr. Larin’s practice offers a wide variety of specialty procedures including surgery, toxicological examination, X-ray, anesthetic treatment, oncology, ultrasound, CT scans and MRI scans. There is also a complete laboratory within the hospital for quick turnaround of lab results.

“In addition to our advanced specialized surgical and medical treatments, MVS is well known for providing emergency medical care 24 hours a day, every day of the year,” he added. “All of our board-certified specialists have been awarded advanced diplomacy in their respective clinical areas. All have been practicing veterinary medicine for many years.”

After graduating from Christopher Columbus High School, Dr. Larin attended the University of Florida where he earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine. He then completed a surgical internship with Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Orlando, followed by his residency training at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.

During his residency, Dr. Larin worked alongside some of the top veterinary surgeons in the United States. He has extensive experience in performing soft tissue, oncologic, orthopedic and neurological surgeries. Dr. Larin’s brother, Dr. Jorge Larin, also works at MVS and has more than three decades of expertise in surgery, immunology, vaccine immunity and infectious diseases.

“We’re the hospital that primary care veterinarians refer their clients to for surgery and other specialized treatments,” says Dr. Larin. “As an emergency hospital, upon a pet’s arrival, our priority is stabilization, which can include administering IV fluids, catheters, pain medications and oxygen therapy. A complete medical treatment plan is then shared with the pet owner.”

According to Dr. Larin, the future of Miami Veterinary Specialists looks promising, as the population of Miami-Dade County continues to grow.

“We will continue to hire experienced doctors and technicians and grow the practice,” he said. “The need for medical specialty treatment and emergency care has never been so great.”
