Not Like This

Have you ever been in a situation where you said, “I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”? Have you ever considered that you were exactly where you needed to be at that time?

I believe everything in life comes down to timing and positioning, which is exactly how I teach my players to shoot. When it comes to shooting, the positioning portion addresses alignment and form. Timing, on the other hand, is more intuitive. Players develop great timing around their shooting skills after many, many, many, many hours of practice. Shooting has to become a part of you in order for you to become exceptional.

A friend recently told me an amazing story relating to timing and positioning. He was in California and had just learned to surf. As he rode into a wave, all was well. Suddenly, the wave broke, threw him off of his surfboard, and sucked him under the water. Just as he was getting his bearings to swim back to the surface, an undercurrent sucked him further under the ocean water. He was completely disoriented, at the bottom of the ocean, two miles from the shore, when he suddenly said to himself, “Not like this.” At that point he realized that he had too much to live for. So he touched his feet to the ocean floor and pushed off with all of the strength he could muster. And before he knew it, he was breathing in glorious oxygen.

At the end of this ordeal, he could have easily said that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and played the victim. But he didn’t.

He realized that experience led him to appreciate the “mundane.” The everyday moments: fresh coffee in the morning, snuggles with your babies, sunsets streaked with orange and purple, kisses from your dog, eating dinner as a family. Those are the “mundane” treasures in life that, without timing and positioning, are too often taken for granted.

Timing and positioning also allows you to propel yourself to new heights. Many times someone gave me advice on how to grow, but the timing wasn’t right or the message wasn’t positioned in a way where I could receive it. But, when the timing and positioning align, the message is powerful! It allows me to see another point of view and recognize all experiences for what they are, springboards for growing.

As LR Knost once said, “Life is amazing. And then it’s awful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary.”

Namaste!
