The head coach of the Palmer Trinity School girl’s volleyball squad,William Gonzalez, sees his team as motivated, talented, and experienced. He is exceptionally optimistic about the outcome of this season, especially because of the development of a number of younger players.
“All of the players have their own talents,” he said. “They all help our team individually.”
Coach Gonzalez named seniors Ellie Nosich and Kristen Fernandez, as well as sophomore Ashley Quero, as the leaders on the team. The leadership is necessary, he says, because the volleyball team has six sophomores, including a new setter, Juliette Hamilton. Overall, Gonzalez thinks that there are a couple of new players that are going to help the team out significantly.
And the players, new and old, can hold their weight. Last year, the team made it to the district finals and advanced to regional play. They defeated Miami Country Day 25- 15, 25-22, 25-11, and a big contributor in that matchup was Gonzalez’s leader, Ellie Nosich. She had 26 digs, 15 kills and four blocks. However, in the next game, the Regional Semifinals, the team fell to perennial foe Westminster Christian in a match that went to four sets.
Gonzalez is supremely confident that his club won’t fall short again. And he has the track record to prove it. Under his leadership, the Palmer Trinity girl’s volleyball program has been one of the major programs in South Florida. For the last decade or so, the Palmer Trinity program has been synonymous with regional playoffs and success.
“This year, we’re going to win districts, we’re going to win regionals, I think we are this close to States,” he said. “In talent, motivation, and the quality of team, everything indicates that we’re a States-bound team.”
