Palmer Trinity School (PTS) recently welcomed Jim DeFede, an investigative reporter for CBS News Miami and host of the public affairs program “Facing South Florida,” as a guest speaker for its Mosaic program, an inclusivity curriculum integrated into its advisory program for grades six through 12.

DeFede addressed students’ questions on the integrity of the media, the principles of fair and balanced reporting and identifying trustworthy news sources. He encouraged students to familiarize themselves with a variety of media perspectives and highlighted that although there are limitations present within news organizations, the hallmark of a good journalist is to be objective and not allow personal biases to sway public perception.

“We appreciated Jim DeFede’s candid conversation on the power of journalism and the importance of fair reporting,” said Patrick Roberts, Head of School.

DeFede, the winner of eight regional Emmy Awards, has covered Florida politics for more than 30 years. He began his career in journalism in 1986 at The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington. He later became a staff writer at Miami New Times, followed by working as a metro columnist for the Miami Herald. DeFede has been a part of the CBS News Miami team since 2006 and has produced several award-winning documentaries and specials on local issues affecting South Florida.
