Pinecrest Gardens March 21, 2017

in_the_heights_2013_bannerGet ready to experience an exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan’s most vibrant communities, Washington Heights. This unique Broadway Musial is different from anything else around: the style of music and the storytelling are unique. Beginning as a word-of-mouth sensation on Broadway back in 2008, audiences have come back time and time again to see In The Heights, a Tony award winning musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the critically acclaimed HAMILTON. Vibrant, funny, and life-affirming, In The Heights explores the issues affecting society through modern dialogue, hip hop and street dance.

At the crack of dawn on the hottest day of summer, Usnavi opens up his tiny bodega in his bustling neighborhood where everyone knows everybody, and the breeze carries the sweet sounds of three generations of music. He dreams of a return to his native Dominican Republic. His childhood friend, Nina, has just returned from her first year at Stanford with some surprising news for her parents, and, priced out of the ‘hood’, salon owner Daniela is packing up her sass and taking it to the Bronx. But when Usnavi discovers he has sold a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000, everyone on the block gets a dose of what it means to be home.

In The Heights brings together a heady mix of salsa, merengue, soul, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. People who love the Latin groove, and of course those who like musical theatre and street-dance will really love this show BUT it also has huge appeal to people who don’t usually go for a ‘musical’. Join us for this high-energy show presented and performed by Miami Acting Company, opening Thursday, March 23, through Sunday, March 26. Tickets are$30 Adults, $25 Seniors, $20 Students, $15 Children under 14 and can be purchased on line at pinecrestgardens.org or at the gate the evening of each performance.

This performance is part of an ongoing workshop where Yarling coaches young jazz performers on the finer nuances of being performing artists. She is quick to point out that while the Miami area has many excellent programs in schools and outside teaching youngsters to play, there aren’t as many opportunities for them to learn how to be successful musicians and performers.

The performance is free with our regular park admission of $5 for adults or $3 for seniors and full park amenities are included.
