Cancer never sleeps and neither did Relay for Life participants during Pinecrest’s fourth annual version of the event that lasted from noon Saturday, March 1 until 8 a.m. Sunday, March 2 in Evelyn Greer Park.
This year, the neighboring municipalities of Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay joined Pinecrest to make for a huge event with more than 40 teams and a $200,000 donation goal. All proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society.
The final tally has not been calculated yet, as donations will be accepted until April 11. For information on how to donate, call 305-234-2121 and ask for Pat Janisse or Angela Gasca.
The theme for this year’s event was World’s Fair 2014. The Village team’s theme was France and Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner led the Youth Advisory Council with a Spain theme. All cancer survivors were honored and pampered with massages and goodie bags in a special Survivors Tent. They were also served a complimentary lunch and dinner.
Each team had a dedicated booth that featured food from the country the team represented, an activity and a fact board about a specific type of cancer.
There was also a children’s area with bounce houses and pony rides, and bands that included the School of Rock, and the Palmetto Elementary School Jazz Combo performed throughout the event. After hours activities were led by the Pinecrest Youth Advisory Council and included an eating contest and card games.
