A bout 100 residents attended the Pinecrest Pioneers summer luncheon on a recent Wednesday in May to celebrate the lives and stories of Village seniors.
There are approximately 600 seniors over 80 years old living within Pinecrest’s 7.5 square miles; about 20 residents are in their 90s. Seventeen of them attended this year’s luncheon.
The 90-year-old-plus seniors living in the Village are: Conchita Bustillo, 90, Francis Losh, 96, Milton Pikarsky, 90, Grace Drout, 96, Ruth Braddock, 90, Anthony Kruszewski, 90, Mary Horton, 95, Vieno McKenzie, 95, Sam Insalaco, 93, Ruth Klein, 95, Ray Fisher, 90, John Burt, 93, B. Kriston, 92, Dorothy Clubreath, 94, Dr. Bill Leone, 92, Ellen Luss, 92, and Norene Morris, 92.
Mayor Cindy Lerner began hosting the Pioneers Luncheon in 2009. This year’s event was catered by volunteer Garden Club members who brought home-cooked food and served it. Many of the Pinecrest Pioneers lived in this once rural area as children during World War II when German submarines lurked off the shores of Matheson Hammocks Park.
They grew up and raised families during an industrial boom that propelled their neighborhood to become one of South Florida’s most exclusive suburbs.
This special day ended with a performance by the Miamians.
