Pinecrest Rotarians are holding an open house on September 27, 7 p.m., at Evelyn Greer Park in the Lesley Bowe Hall. The club will be welcoming its many new members and those interested in serving the community through Rotary’s many local and global outreach efforts. Joshua Marano, a maritime archeologist with the National Park Service, will be the featured guest speaker that night and share stories about his numerous expeditions. This promises to be an interesting talk and is a great opportunity to meet current Rotarians and learn how Rotarians’ “Service Above Self” motto has made an incredible positive impact on our community and beyond. By the way, coming up next, on October 11, 7 p.m., the Pinecrest Rotary’s program will feature retired MDC Medical Examiner and polio survivor Norman Kassoff who will speak on Rotary’s Polio Plus program.
In other Rotary Club news, Coral Gables Rotarians continue to attract great speakers thanks to the efforts of their Past President in charge of programs, Felix Pardo. Since AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been the topic on everyone’s radar, Coral Gables Rotarians heard from two guest speakers on the topic recently including attorney Fred Woodbridge. Fred, husband of Past President Yoli Woodbridge, is always a big draw whenever he speaks to the Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) and, of particular interest on August 24, Fred shared insight on ethics and liability issues for those using AI / GPT Chat. Turns out, reading the fine print when you accept the terms and conditions leaves you, not GPT Chat /AI, liable; so, be careful with what you use.
Yoli Woodbridge, aside from her connection to Fred, is an amazing Rotarian who had a busy week organizing the RCCG’s new member mixer on August 22, at Season’s 52, in Coral Gables. With a small group of new members and some officers, the intimate setting provided a great way to bond with new members including Jenny Azcuy, Dipak Joshi, Gui and Amanda Fujisawa with baby Guilia, and Mitchell Zuriarrain. Others attending the affair with this writer were Past Presidents Felix Pardo, Sally Baumgartner; President-Elect Jim Skinner; and Immediate Past President Ana Fournaris. With President Frank Sexton unable to attend, Ana took charge of the program of self-introductions as everyone enjoyed wine, flat breads and more.
In other news, Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez, President MDC Wolfson Campus, recently joined us on Gloria Gab LIVE show to give us an update on MDC and share information on partnerships and programs. Now in her fifth year and under her watch, Dr. Gonzalez has spearheaded the effort to promote the college’s short term certificates program to upskill our workforce.
The New Student Center (NSC) team works on developing community partnerships to make these free programs available to residents. In fact, the NSC team has been working with Lotus House since October 2022, and has enrolled 19 women in certificate programs thus far. Partnering with Mami-Dade County’s Human Resources Department, county job descriptions have been reclassified to align with MDC’s certificate and AA programs. MDC has truly been remarkable in this effort to upskill our workforce. For information, visit https://www.mdc.edu/skillup/.
In other service club news, as the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is celebrating its centennial, membership chair Kim Davison recently announced the club has grown to 90 members with additional prospective members in the pipeline. To get to know everyone, on August 30, the club had a “Good Vibes” mixer for new, prospective, and old members. The dynamic group of women are non-stop in their efforts to make a positive impact. In fact, on September 11, to commemorate 9/11, fundraising chair Rita Tennyson is planning a fundraiser for $30 pp to benefit Coral Gables Fire and Police at Doc B’s. More on that in the next issue.
