GARDEN CORNER: LIVING COLLECTIONS, SPOTLIGHT ON CROTONS

Public gardens have many functions: as beautiful spaces and places for sensory enrichment and tranquility, to provide environments that are supportive of psychological and physical well-being, as resources for horticultural and biological education, as settings for art, culture, and social events, and as repositories of historical landscapes and plants.

Whether intentionally designed or randomly assembled, gardens contain plants that are usually categorized by their genetic relationships, cultivation requirements, places of origin, uses, or display qualities. Public gardens are like museums that conserve and exhibit living plants. Pinecrest Gardens staff identify and curate collections and are involved in their protection and preservation.

In this column’s Garden Corner, we’re excited to highlight a key finding from our recent collections assessment study at Pinecrest Gardens. Our living plants are vital institutional assets, encapsulating decades of horticultural history. As we evolve, so too does our commitment to enhancing our landscapes and visitor experiences. Our upgrades include a new botanical database, which will streamline plant record-keeping and make plant information readily accessible online. Supported by GIS technology for precise mapping and inventory and boosted by a new collections and education assistant funded through grants and donations, this initiative will enrich signage and educational programs throughout the Gardens.

Photographed: One plant species that has been a part of the Pinecrest Gardens landscape for many years and is recognizable to visitors is the Garden Croton, Codiaeum variegatum. Pinecrest Gardens completed documentation of the various types located in the gardens. To read the full article, visit pinecrestgardens.org to read full article.
