The Village Council officially opened the recently renovated Pinecrest Gardens’ Hammock Pavilion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Pavilion was the original location of Parrot Jungle’s Parrot Bowl.
The nearly 1,120-square-foot Hammock Pavilion is located at the center of Pinecrest Gardens and has two Koi fish ponds. The Pavilion will be used to educate and entertain.
Gardens director Alana Perez envisions using the space for lectures in conservation, historical preservation, the arts, literature and horticulture. It will be used as an intimate venue for children’s cultural events such as puppetry and storytelling, and for intimate performing arts that include poetry readings and jazz and chamber music.
The renovation was made with great care to preserve the Hammock Pavilion’s historic integrity. No alterations were made to historic materials that characterize the original Parrot Bowl.
Deteriorating historic features were repaired rather than replaced.
Pinecrest Gardens was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2011 because of its historic significance and to preserve its 14 acres of native forested wetland, tropical hardwood hammock and native cypress slough hammock.
