As a longtime advocate for safer, more connected neighborhoods, I’m urging Pinecrest residents to pay close attention to an important opportunity that could reshape our community for the better.
The Pinecrest Village Council is currently considering a proposal to create a bicycle and pedestrian grid throughout the village. If approved, this bold plan would connect homes to schools, parks, and businesses—making it safer and easier for all of us to get around without always relying on a car. You can show your support here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/support-the-pinecrest-bicycle-and-pedestrian-grid/
Let’s be clear: this is not a vanity project. Miami-Dade County has nearly double the national average of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. That’s unacceptable. It’s time we follow the lead of cities and countries where smart design and thoughtful investment have saved lives—and improved daily life in the process.
The proposed “Phase 1” of the grid would include new paths along 67th Avenue and 120th Street, linking key community destinations like Palmetto High School, Gulliver Prep, Bet Shira, Mas Park, and the shops and restaurants along US-1. It would also connect with regional trails like the Underline and the Old Cutler Trail.
What makes this initiative even more impressive is the level of community engagement.
Residents of all ages have joined Bike Pinecrest rides—some with 50+ participants—demonstrating just how many people are eager to bike, if only it were safer. The Village is even working with internationally respected experts like the Dutch Urban Design Team and Dutch Cycling Embassy to design smart, people-first infrastructure.
This kind of planning isn’t just progressive—it’s essential.
As one resident and urban planner put it, “A well-designed active transportation network gives residents real mobility choices, reduces traffic, and fosters a healthier and more connected village.” I couldn’t agree more.
But here’s the catch: this project is competing with many others for funding and attention.
If residents don’t speak up now, it could stall or disappear altogether.
So, I’m calling on every Pinecrest neighbor to do one thing today:
● Support Phase 1 of the bicycle and pedestrian grid.
● Sign the petition: bikepinecrest.com
● Email the Council: council@pinecrest-fl.gov
Ride your bike. Wear a t-shirt. Get involved.
Let’s show our elected officials that Pinecrest is ready to lead with smart, safe, community-first solutions. This isn’t just about bikes—it’s about vision, safety, and the kind of village we want to build for the next generation.
Let’s make it happen.
