It’s always inspiring to see neighbors come together to make our world a cleaner, kinder place — and this summer, Rotarians and women’s clubs have been leading the charge.
On July 12, Rotarians gathered at Matheson Hammock Park and Marina for the Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo. Volunteers — some on boats, others on land — pulled in 112 abandoned crab traps and 782 pounds of trash. The day’s most unexpected find? A Gucci purse! Coordinating this and other environmental initiatives for Rotary District 6990 is Robert Bull, President of the Rotary Club of Pinecrest, who is passionate about tackling the plastics problem in our waterways — an issue close to the heart of many who cherish South Florida’s natural beauty.
The Brickell Rotary Club also made waves, teaming up with Clean Miami Beach and the Nobu Hotel for a special beach cleanup honoring Japan Ocean Day — a heartfelt nod to Miami Beach’s sister city, Fujisawa. Seventy volunteers collected 270 pounds of trash that day, including Rotarians Roberto Reyes (with baby Alicia), Valentina Montes, Valeria Zapata, and Natalia Numa.
Meanwhile, in the women’s club world, GFWC Florida District 11 clubs are embracing a “no plastics” initiative while also focusing on restoring and upgrading their clubhouses. The Coconut Grove Woman’s Club spent the summer improving their historic clubhouse and, on August 2, celebrated a brand-new sound system with a lively dance party fundraiser coordinated by Marlene Erven. DJ Nicholas Martin kept the dance floor hopping while guests enjoyed appetizers and a cash bar. Among the many helping to make this event a success were Lina Duque, Kat Sitton, Freda McMillan, Jeanie Heller, Nancy Boggio, Lisa Remeny, Mimi Lara, Travis Swain, Jonathan Welsh, Catherine Swain Pendlebury, and Robert Deresz. The event was such a hit that President Illine Davila has already been asked to make these dance parties a regular thing!
The Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) has also been busy. Their monthly Gringo Bingo continues to be a fan favorite, and in July they went above and beyond, hosting two fundraisers in one week at Birdie Bistro. The July 22 bingo night benefited the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE Academy). Days later, CGWC celebrated Rita Tennyson’s birthday with another event raising money for Voices for Children and The Women Voice Network, each receiving $500 thanks to Rita’s friends, club sponsors, and generous donors.
Finally, on the sports front, the Orange Blossom Classic returns to Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, August 30. This promises to be a great game as Florida A&M University plays Howard University in this Labor Day weekend tradition. OBC’s Executive Director, Kendra Bulluck, was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to share information on the festivities for the weekend. In fact, for those who want a deal, they have a discounted package that includes a Friday luncheon and then a night football game (FIU vs Bethune Cookman) and then on Saturday, the FAMU vs Howard OB Classic.
To learn more about the events, visit orangeblossomclassic.com or view the video podcast at cnewstv.com. If you love football, this is a even bigger weekend as UM plays Notre Dame that weekend on Sunday.
