SIX for 6 at the Arsht

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you were one of the lucky few to watch the Tony Awards last summer, you might have been surprised to learn that viewership was up 39 percent from 2021. Oscar winner and electrifying stage performer Ariana DeBose merrily hosted the three hour event which celebrated Broadway’s COVID comeback. And if you didn’t tune in, maybe you were one of nearly seven million philistines who preferred a Simpson’s rerun instead, proving the modern playhouse conundrum; how do we get good people to a great show? So Miami, if you are listening, here is a glorious opportunity.

Our gorgeous Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will present SIX the Musical, the euphoric tribute to the wives of Henry VIII running Tuesday, October 25 until Sunday, October 30. The Arsht, Miami’s modern, sophisticated, and magnificent palace is our version of the terrible Tudor’s Hampton Court Palace. Let’s hope that Cesar Pelli’s creation will live as long as Sir Christopher Wren’s.

That’s SIX for 6 nights, with weekend matinees for good measure. Featuring both all-woman cast and all-woman band, SIX won 23 awards in the 2021/2022 Broadway season, including the Tony Award for Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.

The long life escaped a few of Henry’s wives. The old playground chant and musical refrain goes like this: Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived. Here, on stage, centuries later, the wives get the last word – sort of. Musicals are not the go-to for historical accuracy, but never mind. That’s entertainment.

These women have been waiting for several centuries to tell their stories, and here they are without men to interrupt them. (Full disclosure, I am a man in the process of attempting to learn this from my wife.) On Broadway, no men were injured in the staging of the show, as the cast and musicians are all free of the Y chromosome. What a splendid achievement!

The creators of this show were twenty somethings, so the energy is calculated to set any stage on fire. Imagine Abba meeting Spice Girls who dream that Grease’s Olivia Newton John secretly wants to be Gaga, Rhianna, Beyoncé, and Britney rolled into Tudor corduroy.

Therefore, if you would like to righteously throw your hands in the air, shake ‘em like you just don’t care, AND ball them into fists over centuries of female mistreatment which legitimately crescendoes into fully warranted #MeToo movements, I suggest you buy a ticket to see this empowerment on full display. These ladies deserve revenge.

Which they get in 80 vigorous minutes of nonstop acidity. As one character says, “History’s about to get over-throned.” Each of the exes gets her own ax to grind diving deeper into song, dance, and story. Both the original London debut and the Broadway prizewinners featured sizzling all female sextets behind the six sizzling sisters telling their stories. Expect the same here. Finally, if you’d like a little preview, The SIX: LIVE ON OPENING NIGHT Broadway album debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard cast album charts, surpassed 6 million streams in its first month, and is available on all musical platforms.

SIX nearly got derailed before it traveled. The original March 2020 debut never happened as NYC ordered all theaters to shut down as the pandemic took hold. But like the wives of Henry had to wait to tell their tales, it was just a matter of time. Now here in Miami, at our Arsht Palace, be prepared to get your crocs knocked off. All ages are welcome.
