The Village of Pinecrest, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), is excited to highlight the growing trend of students walking, biking, and riding the Pinecrest People Mover to school.
“We are empowering children and families to make choices that strengthen their budgets and their health,” says Mayor Joseph M. Corradino. “Choosing multimodal transportation means parents get relief from transportation costs, kids build confidence and strength, our community is more environmentally friendly, and our streets become safer for everyone.”
Several local schools have embraced comprehensive safety education programs. Pinecrest Elementary, Palmetto Middle, and Howard Drive Elementary have completed the “Walk Safe” program, which teaches students lifesaving pedestrian skills. Palmetto Middle School has gone further by implementing the “Bike Safe” program, ensuring students learn to navigate streets confidently and safely on bicycles.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools endorses the University of Miami’s research-based Bike Safety curriculum as part of these safety initiatives. The Bike Safe educational curriculum was created to improve the bike safety knowledge of middle school students. By employing a research-based approach, this curriculum has shown significant improvements in students’ understanding of safe biking practices, instilling confidence in parents that their children are ready for active transportation.
Additionally, the Pinecrest People Mover provides free transportation for students attending Miami Palmetto High School and Palmetto Middle School who reside within two miles of either campus. This service presents families with a practical and economical solution to traditional transportation challenges. The Pinecrest People Mover operates on designated routes connecting residential areas to school zones, running during morning and afternoon hours, aligning with student schedules.
The collaboration between Pinecrest and Miami-Dade County Public Schools demonstrates how communities can work together to create safer and more environmentally sustainable transportation environments. Visit www.pinecrest-fl.gov/PPM for routes, schedules, and eligibility.
