Sol Ruiz’s Positive Vibration Nation

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A late email from Teo Castellanos reminded me that I had almost forgotten about something special on the horizon. Grammy-nominated recording artist, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Sol Ruiz is set to perform Positive Vibration Nation at the Miami Theater Center on Friday, April 12th, and Saturday, April 13th, at 8:00 p.m. Judging from everything else the Miami Light Project is involved with, like Rosie Herrera’s spellbinding Make Believe, this too should be electrifying.

Positive Vibration Nation is a new full-length rock opera blending Caribbean beats with Miami’s cultural essence. The show incorporates live performances integrated with tech to create a 22nd century experience of sound, visuals, costume, dance, and Caribbean music. Big Caribbean; lot of variety. With roots as the foundation of Miami’s uniqueness, this hopes to connect the audience with a positive message. (Positive vibration, yeah! Positive!)

If you really want to understand some of Miami’s sundry layers, this will contribute mightily.

As the March and April calendars here are packed tight as the stagefront at ULTRA, patrons juggle festival, concert, party, and event schedules with the same desperation as drivers during the Palmetto rush hour or midnight salseros jockeying for space at Ball & Chain.

With libretto by Sol Ruiz, the premiere of Positive Vibration Nation is the brainchild of its creator. The creative team behind the show includes many of the most talented artists in the local hive:

● Sol Ruiz: Creator, Performer, Protagonist
● Teo Castellanos: Director and Dramaturg
● Sandra Portal-Andreu: Choreographer
● Rey Rodriguez: Guitarist and Performer
● Alejandro Sierra: Trumpet and Performer
● Julio Cesar Gonzalez: Violinist and Performer
● Charly Poe: Percussionist, DJ and Performer
● Fernando Perdomo: Musical Producer and Guitarist

Performing in Spanglish, Sol Ruiz has released six albums under various names including Picadillo and Sol and The Tribu and has toured globally. This production is funded by The Knight Foundation, NPN, National Endowment for the Arts, and Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects and Miami Light Project. Bless them!

The Opera, performed by her band Sol and The Tribu, self-styled ambassadors of the latest “New Miami Sound.” They say they pride themselves on a marriage of Caribbean influences and American swamp funk. Sol’s tribe has seven members, with more than 20 musicians and creatives forming the Tribu Collective. Together, they make material that represents the 305 and our culture. In 2018, Ruiz released a home demo of “Is it ok to say?” as part of Ted Hearne’s project for which she was included in the Grammy nomination.

The show will be held at the Miami Theater Center, located at 9806 NE 2nd Ave, Miami Shores, FL 3313812. Tickets for the show are available online: https://miamilightproject.com/event/sol-ruiz-positive-vibration-nation/
