It has been an active month for Rotarians. The Rotary Club of South Miami celebrated its 75th anniversary on March 29, with a beautiful dinner at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club.
Since its founding in 1950, the Rotary Club of South Miami has been a force for positive change locally and abroad producing the SOMI Art Fest for the last 40 years; sponsoring the first Rotary Club in the Bahamas, the Rotary Club of Nassau, in 1960: and a plethora of other initiatives focusing on youth and the arts throughout the year. This annual juried art festival, which attracts 25,000 festival goers, also provides a platform for local and national artists and raises funds for scholarships through the South Miami Rotary Foundation. The foundation awards $10,000 in scholarships to four high school seniors in South Miami who choose to pursue an education in the arts, and another $10,000 is donated annually to local non-profits supporting these causes.
Among the special guests at the celebration were District Governor Dennis Caltagirone and his wife Lee; Jim Skinner, Rotary Club of Coral Gables President; and Keith Douglass, former Assistant Governor and Past President of Rotary Club of Marathon, with wife Diane, former county commissioner and mayor of Monroe County. The event also recognized former Rotary Scholars Claudia Valderrama and Shawn DeNight’s outstanding achievements and contributions to education and cultural understanding.
At the end of March, members of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) returned from a mission to the Dominican Republic. The trip was led by the club’s International Committee Chair Carol Brock, who was accompanied by several committee members including Yolanda Woodbridge; Bill Quesenberry and wife, Chie; and Jennifer Kyla. Aside from delivering school supplies to children, this trip also served to check on the projects the club’s foundation has been supporting at the Alfalit preschools in that country. Rotarians involved in the visit felt blessed to meet the children who were most grateful and excited to receive the supplies and meet everyone. This is one of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables’ many international outreach efforts that help support worthy projects and programs year after year.
In other service club news, Mother’s Day is coming up soon and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is planning mini fundraiser leading up to its annual Mother’s Day Tea on May 10th that supports a free children’s dental clinic that the club owns and operates. On May 3, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Kendra Scott in Dadeland Mall is hosting a Sip and Shop for Mother’s Day with 20% of the sales to benefit the clinic. Then on May 10th, the club will hold its annual Mother’s Day Tea entitled “Passage to India.” This event is always a great way to get together with friends and family to celebrate moms and those who are much loved. Come in costume if you like and plan on lots of great photo ops, music, entertainment, food and more. For tickets go to Eventbrite or gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.
By the way, there is still time to sign-up the CGWC’s June 28 cruise to also support the club’s free children dental clinic. See info below.
Coco Plum Woman’s Club recently helped out with an Honor Flight out of Ft. Lauderdale airport. These Honor Flights are held every year taking veterans to Washington D.C. where they visit Arlington Cemetery to pay respect and remember old comrades in arms.
Participating in the effort were Yolanda Woodbridge, Sue Nichols, Sandra Williamson, Sara Warren, Kim Schain, and Joyce Windhorst.
In other news, the Miami Marlins vs. the New York Mets game on April 1st served to support the second annual One Day for Jackson, an annual day of giving for the Foundation. The Marlins won the game topping off a great day that was enjoyed by several who have been treated at Jackson. Among the special guests were Brianna Denny whose life was saved at Jackson. Brianna, a “One Day for Jackson” Miracle Story, threw the first pitch while Mario Ramil, local comedian and Foundation supporter, provided entertainment with his beautiful family including his toddler who danced with the mascots and stole the show. Flavia Llizo, Chief Executive Officer of the Jackson Health Foundation, spoke of the importance of Jackson Health, Miami’s safety net hospital system and noted that one hundred percent of funds raised during this campaign will go toward supporting Jackson’s mission to provide a single, high standard of quality care for the residents of Miami-Dade, regardless of their ability to pay.
