The Deering Estate supports emerging and mid-career artists who work in a multitude of disciplines and media. The prestigious and competitive Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program acts as an incubator for creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public.
Deering Estate welcomes Marlon Johnson in his second consecutive year as Deering Estate McCormick Art Fellow of the Deering Estate’s AIR Program. The fellowship is sponsored in part by the Deering Estate Foundation and the Charles Deering McCormick Friends of Art Fund. Johnson has been invited as previous Artist-in-Residence and will continue to engage with the Deering Estate through a series of planned lectures with guest speakers and artists, take-over tours and events in and out of his studio that will enhance and compliment the Deering Estate’s cultural programming.

Artist in Residence Program
The Artist in Residence program currently welcomes professional Visual, Performing, and Literary Artists who are self-motivated and focused. The primary basis for selection of our artists is the strength and quality of the applicant’s work as well as a clear objective for the time of their residency. Both Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies are available and are competitively selected through a jury process using leading professionals from our family of galleries, collaborative arts, and cultural organizations.
As evident from our Artist in Residence Alumni, the Deering Estate Artist in Residence Program has been a catalyst for artistic practice and recognition including additional residencies, national and local grants, gallery representation, collection acquisitions, and community engagement. As a cultural arts organization we are very proud of the role that our program has had in our artists’ careers, the positive measurable interactions with the public, and even in our growing cultural partnerships. We have had the privilege of presenting and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, authors, and performers.
