An old proverb says a rolling stone gathers no moss; “People who are always moving, with no roots in one place or another, avoid responsibilities and cares.” Here we can flip it a bit, because our Moss Center has been taking responsibility and caring about entertaining us since 2011.
A world in which people are respected, educated and loved may seem far-fetched, but nothing addresses the beauty of diversity, the merit of equity, and the importance of inclusion more than the arts. With this in mind, let me throw some sun on the Moss Center which has looked after South Miami-Dade’s cultural well-being since it first opened.
The Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center, formerly the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, opened in October 2011, presenting global artists in music, dance and theater to the community of South Miami-Dade while engaging in extensive outreach and education initiatives. Designed by an acclaimed design team led by our own Arquitectonica, Inc., the Moss Center is an avant-garde cultural treasure and community meeting place.
Over the last several years and its name change, the Moss Center has been home to a number of wonderful performances. Some of those include Jon Batiste, Kurt, Elling, Zap Mama, Black Violin, Monty Alexander and dozens of others I am ashamed to omit.
Last year, I missed ABBA, two-time Grammy award winner, Samara Joy, the dance theater of Harlem, a Klezmerband, the Sofia, Philharmonic, Orchestra of Bulgaria, an HBCU DRUMline, the String Queens and more. This year I missed Twyla Tharp, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Nu Deco, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Miami City Ballet. I strike out more than the Marlins.
For the historical record, The Moss Center has continued to kickstart every season with its free backyard bash and October concert on the lawn, which next year will be 11 years old. That event has offered a variety of performers like Molly Hatchet, Morris Day and the Time, Pablo Cruise, and the Hot 8 Brass Band. Let me say it straight, the administrative team at the Moss Center makes as compelling an argument for multiculturalism, opportunity, and open-mindedness as can ever be made. These people are a tribute to wokeness. Why in the world would anyone be opposed to this kind of experience?
I have been remiss in neglecting to recognize the gifts that the Moss Center has given residents trapped in traffic down south. I have been remiss in my residential duties by not attending enough programming. I have been remiss not to have written more about the Moss Center. I started this article more than a year ago. I apologize. Coming up soon are Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami, Classics Albums Live (3 times), International Ballet Fest, Zach Bartholomew Band, the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
We all know that the internet is a blessing and curse, with all the information in the world including a cesspool of misinformation. Researching the Moss Center revealed numerous dates and histories, many of which are laughably incorrect. Therefore, everything you need to know the most about this bright shining light in the Ridge you can find online.
