The Olympics are back. In just a few weeks, men and women from across the globe will gather in Tokyo for competition in everything from swimming, to track and field, to skateboarding.
Becoming a world class athlete is an amazing achievement. To be sure, a person needs to possess raw talent, but to attain greatness it takes years and years of rigorous practice.
Olympic hopefuls must apply total dedication to their sport, for there are no short cuts when it comes to winning a gold medal. Success involves lots of time and lots of work.
While some people might seem to make friendships effortlessly, make no mistake: building meaningful, life giving relationships takes time and work. It involves countless experiences, conversations and activities through which to get to know another person—his or her interests and skills; strengths and growing edges; hopes and hurts; joys and struggles.
Being a friend involves careful listening, and careful speech…both of which are honed through months, years, and even decades of personal investment. Indeed, the best way to have a friend is to be a friend: one who is willing to stick with a relationship for the long haul. In doing so, that relationship can achieve greatness: great compassion, great patience, great support and great joy.
Nurturing friendships takes total dedication, yet the results are worth their weight in gold.
