The Miami Villagers recently presented a check for $5,000 towards new terrazzo flooring installed in the Hibiscus Gallery and breezeway of the historic Pinecrest Gardens. The site was formerly the Parrot Jungle and the old terrazzo flooring had been damaged beyond repair. It was necessary to replace it with as close a match as possible to the original 1950s design.
The new floor is part of a major renovation and restoration of the Hibiscus Gallery that includes bringing the room up to hurricane code and updating the HV/AC system while keeping true to the building’s historic integrity. The Gallery is used for many events and art installations at the Gardens.
New flooring is just the latest example of The Villagers’ support for the Gardens. Previous grants have contributed to the restoration of the historic entrance, Hammock Pavilion (former Parrot Bowl), historic bird cages, and the 1932 Whilden-Carrier Cottage. The Cottage was the home to Carl Whilden, Chief Foreman at Fairchild Tropical Gardens, and was relocated to the Gardens in 2003. The Gardens are continuing extensive restoration work.
“We are grateful to The Villagers for their ongoing support of Pinecrest Gardens,” said Alana Perez, Director, Pinecrest Gardens. “Now that the breezeway is complete and everything is in perfect condition, we are able to highlight the historic terrazzo inlay of Pinky the Cockatoo embedded at the building’s entrance.”
About the Miami Villagers: The Villagers work to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of local historic sites and neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County. Founded in 1966, the not-for-profit all-volunteer group has assisted more than 75 endangered sites with 170 grants.
