Miami-Dade County has not had an elected sheriff for nearly sixty-five years. Let’s be clear—we probably shouldn’t be electing a sheriff in the first place. But alas, that ship has sailed and we will be electing our sheriff next year in a partisan election.
Broward County has given us a good example of what not to do. Here is what we can do to avoid the law enforcement circus across the county line.
First off, as citizens who value public safety, let’s resist the temptation to treat this like a hyper partisan election, if possible. We should look for a lifelong law enforcement officer who has the trust of elected leaders from both sides of the aisle. An individual who has been given command of our incredibly large and diverse force by both Republicans and Democrats.
Ideally our first sheriff in decades will be homegrown. Educated in our local schools and who has first-hand experience with our ethnically diverse community and institutions.
If we are crafting an ideal sheriff, we would want someone who has seen our county grow, change and is familiar with the unique challenges we face. This person would have come up through the ranks, from a patrol officer all the way to the top.
A 2024 Miami-Dade Sheriff would be the child of immigrants who loves his country and community. A bi-lingual communicator who transcends party labels. A Democrat who places public safety above all else. A Republican who has the courage to take a knee with his African American officers.
We should put professionalism and experience above everything else and leave the partisanship where it belongs.
Over the next sixteen months take a look at all the candidates and do the research. I think we might just find the ideal candidate for sheriff that Miami-Dade County needs and deserves.
