Growing up in Athens, Greece, food was woven into all aspects of Dimitris Harvalis’ life. His grandmother Cornelia used fresh and simple ingredients to orchestrate tasteful dishes that inspired Harvalis to be a chef. He remembers that each day, the aromas of garlic, lemon and oregano swept through his home like the notes of a familiar song luring him to her side.
“She always managed to make the most amazing dishes from simple, fresh ingredients,” said Mr. Harvalis about his grandmother. “That is what I aspire to deliver to my customers every day – a little piece of my experience as a boy in Greece.”
Today, Harvalis is three decades into his career as a chef, with the last six as the owner of Elia Gourmet. On August 16 he opened the second location of the eatery at the Pinecrest Community Center Café which is the newest addition to the newly renovated center.
Elia Gourmet brings the distinct yet simple flavors of Greek cooking to Pinecrest by offering healthy food options with a Mediterranean twist. The menu includes breakfast, wraps, salads, bowls, freshly made juices, gourmet baked goods and a kid’s menu.
The concept of Elia Gourmet is simple: fresh ingredients with authentic flavors in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
Patrons enjoy indoor seating with a contemporary design that flows from floor to ceiling in muted greys and whites with lime and tangerine bursts of color. The seating outdoors is next to a playground and tot lot with wider views of the Village Green.
Mr. Harvalis plans to offer weekend brunch and a food delivery service in the near future. Catering is currently available. Elia Gourmet is located at 5855 Killian Drive and is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
