The faculty and staff of Miami Palmetto Senior High recently received a surprise lounge makeover as a token of appreciation for their hard work, courtesy of the school PTSA.

With lots of elbow grease from PTSA volunteers and the generosity of some local businesses, the lounge now provides a welcoming oasis to take a break or even hold a departmental meeting.

“Our teachers are some of the most hardworking and dedicated professionals that I know, and they deserved a place for themselves that is as special as they are,” said Anna Hochkammer, PTSA president. “Over the years, with academics of course getting priority attention in our limited public school funding, the lounge had become somewhat uninviting. So the PTSA set out to change that.”

Local businesses Pinecrest Ace Hardware, South Florida Home Appliance Showrooms, Inc. and TUUCI provided donations that stretched the PTSA budget. These included paint, a refrigerator and fabric, respectively. Michael Myers, president of South Florida Home Appliance Showrooms even went the extra mile and personally delivered a new refrigerator from one of his five Sears showrooms.

PTSA parents, and even grandparents, pitched in to refinish and recover the dining tables and chairs and make new curtains. According to some, the pièce de résistance has proven to be a new Keurig coffee maker. The donations and volunteer efforts were appreciated.

“It was a labor of love,” said Hochkammer. “All of these businesses have had children in our Pinecrest schools, and it was great to have these businesses come together to help us support our great teachers.”
