Westminster Christian School senior Alexandra Grundler is the school’s Silver Knight nominee in the English and Literature category.
Grundler has earned more than 700 community service hours, many due to her management of the Love of Literacy service project.
“I was given the opportunity to take over this book drive that had only happened once,” she says. “I am the Be the Light Representative for Westminster. The club encourages a passion project. Mine has been the book drive.”
The drives are conducted twice a year, at Christmas time and before summer break. The books are donated to CARE Elementary School in Overtown. Book collections take place before Christmas break and the last few weeks of May.
She exceeded her book goal by collecting more than 150 plus books per collection. The collections are for specific titles, and assigned books for class assignments. Before the collection begins, she receives a book list of which titles are needed.
Since she’s a senior, she’s planning ahead for when she graduates. She hopes to hand it over to an underclassman.
“I would hate to have it end with me,” she says. “I do love this project so much. I personally deliver the books and give them to each individual child. These kids are so excited to have a book to read.”
For the Christmas Drive, she has Be the Light members help her wrap the books. She became involved in Be the Light and the book drive because her family taught her to be a part of philanthropic endeavors.
“I’ve always had a love for literacy, for children, and the desire to help others,” she says.
She is a Junior Orange Bowl Young Ambassador. In that position, she has helped with the holiday parades, toy drives, and worked with the Kiwanis of Little Havena Foundation.
At Westminster, Grundler plays varsity lacrosse. This is her fourth year on the team.
“Last year we won the district championship,” she says.
She was nominated for the Miami Herald Second Team All-Dade in the defense category.
“It was cool to be recognized,” she says. “It was our school’s first Girls Lacrosse district championship win.”
She recently returned from a mission trip to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic that she organized. This was the fourth year going on this mission trip. They donated educational toys, sports equipment, and personal hygiene items for the children to use.
In the past, they’ve built playgrounds, a barn, and painted areas in need.
Grundler is a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll Journalism Honor Society, the World Languages Honor Society, the National Business Honor Society, Rho Kappa and the Science National Honor Society.
She’s part of the signature Entrepreneurship program at WCS.
“The program is very interesting,” she says. “Since I want to go into marketing and business, it has helped solidify my options.”
Last year, she was a club liaison for the Author Academy.
“They needed help,” she says. “I assisted the elementary students with writing devotionals.
I would go every Tuesday, and I helped create, design, and organize the class book.”
The students wrote the devotionals and she would proofread and edit them.
Grundler is a student ambassador, leading tours at Westminster and sharing her pride in attending the school.
She has already been accepted to Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Central Florida, the University of South Florida, Florida International University, High Point University, and Samford University in Alabama. She’s still waiting to hear from Tulane. She applied as a marketing major.
