Clayton Detant

Miami Palmetto High School senior Clayton Detant spent almost two months this summer at Harvard, taking college courses in business law and literature writing.

“I love it,” he says. “I’ve always been into business and economics, but deep down I’ve always been a writer. I do want to become a business lawyer.”

He loves the classes but that’s not to say that the summer session was without challenges.

He was in Cambridge from June 17 and his last day was August 4.

“It was an amazing experience,” he says.

While he was impressed with the hallowed halls of Harvard, he is equally happy to walk the same halls at Palmetto that were trod by students who went on to become astronauts, surgeon generals and Ketanji Brown Jackson who is now a respected U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

“To see that they can succeed and prosper after receiving a fulfilling education at Palmetto gives me hope that I can as well,” he says. “I also strive to continue that history of inclusivity and acceptance for all individuals, to make sure everyone feels they are represented individually.”

As student council president he is working to create events for minority students.

“To make sure everyone is equally represented and accepted in our community and especially in our school,” he says. “I’m Haitian American. Growing up with such a distinct culture has allowed me to embrace who I am. I would like others to be awarded that ability.”

Last year he was the student involvement chair for student council.

“I was in charge of creating events at Palmetto to increase student participation,” he says.

His leadership style has him noticing problems and seeking solutions for those problems.

“Whatever the problem in my school or in my community, I would do everything possible to solve it,” he says.

His concern for equality and equal justice led him to become a member of the Amnesty International Club. He says the club strives to battle local injustice issues.

“We hold pep rallies and protests at our school, as well as organizing events for students to make sure their voices and opinions are heard, no matter how big or how small,” he says.

Detant is the president of DECA so he’s in charge of the school’s business program.

“It’s for students who are passionate about pursuing careers, in hospitality or business management,” he says.

His community service is varied.

“I am a public relations coordinator for Volunteering Miami,” he says. “I do help out any way I can. We reach out to local Miami organizations that need volunteers.”

Detant says Volunteer Miami is a good resource for students of all ages who either need volunteer hours or simply because they need it for college applications.

“And that’s what I’m most passionate about,” he says. “I love making a positive impact on my community.”

Detant has volunteered at Camp Unbeatables at Evelyn Greer Park in Pinecrest. The camp teaches kids financial, social skills, and sports.

“Being a counselor and being able to mentor kids really feels like I’m doing my part to aid future generational leaders,” he says.

His college list includes Harvard, Duke, UCLA, the University of Florida and Florida State University. His goal is to become a business lawyer, but his major may include not only business but political science.
