Senior Corey Eisenson is Miami Palmetto High School’s Silver Knight nominee in the Math category. To become Silver Knight nominees, students participate in community service often creating their own projects.
“My project is a combination of a lot of things, including educating the residents of Florida about the Holocaust and Jewish culture,” he says. “In 2022-2023 I was the ambassador to go to the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach.”
When he visited the memorial, he and the other ambassadors learned about the Holocaust, and they were asked to go back to their home school and teach their fellow students about the horrific era.
“Each time we met they brought in a Holocaust survivor, each with their own stories,” he says.
“One of the things I do at Beth Am is I meet with survivors. To share their stories so their stories live on.”
Last year, during the Florida Legislature’s session, Eisenson spoke in favor of a successful bill to create a Holocaust Remembrance Day in Florida.
“It allows Florida schools to educate about the holocaust in school,” he says.
It came about when he was interning in the capital, shadowing a lobbyist, John Cerra.
“He introduced me to a lot of senators and representatives,” he says. “We were talking, sharing my opinion.”
A state representative from Palm Beach County discussed the bill with him and asked him if he was interested in talking about it. He agreed and appeared before the committee.
Eisenson learned more about the Holocaust when he took a trip to Poland with his father and several friends. Temple Beth Am sponsored the trip.
“We went to many concentration camps,” he says. “You know what you are walking into.
You see brick buildings. It doesn’t look like a place where there was all that death. You walk inside and you feel that sinking feeling. It’s a sad feeling. I think our first camp was Auschwitz.”
They also visited synagogues that weren’t destroyed during that era. He says it was nice to see thriving Jewish communities there.
Eisenson is a member of the Beth Am Social Justice Teen Fellowship. He says they were required to create a project.
“When I went on the capital trip, I thought I should have to do it on Holocaust remembrance,” he says. “And then I proposed this project.”
His project is called A Transformative Journey to Poland. It calls for teachers to be sent to Poland and bring them back to their respective high schools and teach the students about the Holocaust.
“The curriculum was approved by Miami-Dade County,” he says. “We are trying to get funding from big corporations. It’s going to be done through Beth Am. We would fund most of the trip. They would have to do a deposit of $500.”
He hopes to have it funded for the summer of 2026.
Members of the Teen Fellowship also participate in mission trips. Last year, the teens traveled to Guatemala where they built a portion of a school out of recycled materials. They also spent time with the students.
This year’s trip is to the Dominican Republic.
At Beth AM he’s in the Madrichim program, helping teach the younger children about Judaism. He’s also a member of the Beth Am Federation Temple Youth (BAFTY).
At Palmetto he is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and he’s a homeroom representative.
Eisenson has committed to the University of Florida as a Finance Major.
